Fixed term (27 months)
Applications are invited for the position of Research Fellow sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr Ran Holtzman on the project entitled “Hysteresis of two-phase flows in porous and fractured media: From micro-scale Haines jumps to macro-scale pressure-saturation curves”. This research aims to uncover the underlying non-equilibrium physics that lead to hysteresis, memory and energy dissipation in disordered media. Non-equilibrium flows play a key role in a large range of applications, from everyday phenomena such as water infiltration into a garden or coffee spreading on a fabric, to engineering applications of huge socioeconomical importance such as remediation of contaminated soils or extraction of oil and gas. The project combines the development of state-of-the-art computational, analytical and experimental methods, in close collaboration with prof. with M. Dentz (IDAEA-CSIC) and J. Ortin (Uni. of Barcelona). The project also aims to use the insights gained from the small-scale investigation towards geosequestration of CO2, in collaboration with the British Geological Survey.
The successful candidate should be enthusiastic, curiosity-driven and open-minded, with a substantial understanding of fluid mechanics—in particular in porous media, and good computational skills. A PhD in physics, fluid mechanics, earth sciences, or a related subject with a proven track record of producing high-quality journal publications is essential. The Research Fellow will work within the vibrant environment of the Engineering Applications of Fluid Dynamics group, part of the Research Centre for Fluid and Complex Systems at Coventry University, https://www.coventry.ac.uk/research/areas-of-research/centre-for-fluid-and-complex-systems/engineering-applications-of-fluid-mechanics/
The post holders academic development will be supported through Coventry University’s Early Career Researcher support programmes, alongside other researcher development activities. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to complete the Royal Society’s Media Training Skills course.
This position is full time on a fixed-term basis for 27 months.
