Coventry University has an exciting Human Factors post available within our successful and rapidly expanding and Research Institute for Future Transport & Cities (FTC). Our research explores future vehicles and transport systems in context, trying to understand the challenges and opportunities of influences such as connectivity, automation, shared mobility, electrification, changing business models, and ageing societies. The university has a strong automotive history but is increasingly working across all transport modes including aerospace, maritime and rail.
As part of this role you will initially be working on a range of projects within the newly established NTDC (National Transport Design Centre: http://www.coventry.ac.uk/business/ntdc/) as well as the Centre for Connected and Automotive Autonomous Research (CCAAR), a collaboration with Horiba-MIRA.
Within the NTDC, you will be exploring Human Factors aspects of future vehicles (user experience, comfort perception, usability), as well as the use of digital modelling and visualisation tools (AR/VR/3D displays/ Mixed Reality) as part of the vehicle design process. The focus within
CCAAR is on the development and testing of intelligent vehicles combining real and virtual worlds utilising a suite of simulators that interact with 'living laboratory' environments.
The role provides an excellent opportunity for early career researchers to work across a wide range of projects with different organisations including the European Commission, Innovate-UK, research councils, and the automotive and transport industry. The candidate is also strongly encouraged to grow his or her own research expertise.
The successful candidate will be expected to conduct day-to-day project work. This will involve the following duties: liaising with project partners and clients; experimental design and protocol development; conduct user trials using a range of facilities (including driving simulators, test tracks, Virtual / Augmented Reality, powerwall, mock ups, usability labs); (inter)national travel to partners' and clients' sites; analysis of quantitative and qualitative data; contributing to project deliverables and the development of high-quality academic publications; presenting at national and international conferences; and preparing research-funding bids.
